The Anglican Theological Institute is located in the Bishop Desmond Smith Building in Belmopan (pictured).
Its Mission
The Anglican Theological Institute (ATI) seeks to equip the members of the Anglican Diocese of Belize, both ordained and lay, male and female, young and old, to embrace more fully their leadership roles in the church. The Institute offers a regular program in theological education.
Its Role
- To assist in the discernment process and preparation of potential candidates for ordination.
- To facilitate greater lay participation in the life of the church.
- To play an active role in the Christian Education efforts in the Diocese.
- To help guide and inform the Church’s response to the challenges of today’s Belizean Society.
History and Development
- 1994: A small lay ministers’ training program centered in Belize City and headed by the Rev. Alfred Mead from USA.
- 1996: Program expanded to include preparation of candidates for ordination. Canon Robert Sutherland appointed as director.
- 1999: Further revision and expansion of the program under Canon Philip Wright, as the new director.
- 2002: ATI program headquartered in the capital city of Belmopan with facilities to accommodate overnight students, Fridays to Sundays.
Its Plan
- Greater affiliation with Codrington College in Barbados and United Theological College in Jamaica.
- Accreditation with the University of Belize and the University of the West Indies with respect to Diploma and Certificate Level Courses.
- Production of booklets and other materials touching on different aspects of Christian Ministry and the Church in Society (Belizean Context).
- Incorporate more fully the Hispanic Ministry Preparation Program.
