...Striving for excellence.
The Anglican Church has long been involved in the field of education in Belize, establishing several schools, beginning in the early nineteenth century. Almost from its inception, the Church has understood this involvement in education as essential to its ministry. It now manages, with the financial support of the government, eighteen primary schools and one high school. Even though the majority of the schools are in Belize City, overall they serve a wide cross-section of the general population, catering to students from almost every ethnic and cultural background. The role of the Church itself in the life of the schools has gone well beyond simply running a chaplaincy and conducting services for the student body. Increasingly the Church helps by offering scholarships to needy children, and assists with the feeding programs in the majority of schools.
The first Anglican school was established in 1816, and known at the Honduras Free School. By 1855, the Anglican Church operated three Honduras Free Schools, and our involvement in education has grown ever since. In 1897 The Diocesan High School for girls was established, quickly followed by an Anglican High School for boys in the early 1900s. The Anglican Church continues to be in the forefront of educational milestones across the nation.
Currently the Anglican Diocese of Belize operates:
- 2 Preschools
- 18 Primary Schools
- 2 Special Education Units
- 1 Secondary School
Approximately 5,000 children are enrolled in our schools, and we employ approximately 215 teachers.
